THE SCIENCE BEHIND EPIGENETIC INGREDIENTS IN SKINCARE

We know now that we can affect the way the skin will look tomorrow and in a more distant future, not just today. Epigenetic science gives us a key to many processes in the body and by unlocking them, epigenetic solutions can open up a world of possibilities. Here at Meder Beauty we already have solutions that utilise this cutting-edge science.

WHAT IS EPIGENETIC SCIENCE?

Epigenetic science explores all the ways the external world affects the body’s phenotype without actually changing its genotype.

Phenotype: an individual’s observable traits.
Genotype: complete set of genetic material.

A good example of epigenetic influence is the acceleration in human development: in the last few decades people all over the world have become noticeably taller and larger.

Families that had been relatively short generation after generation, started giving birth to larger babies who grow up to be tall adults. The DNA of these babies’ short ancestors remains unchanged, but their bones still grow longer and muscles stronger. Why? Because these children have access to more nutritious food, vitamins and minerals, they are not plagued by dangerous infectious diseases and experience a lot less stress in their early days.

The genes responsible for increased height had been dormant for generations, but once beneficial influences became strong enough, these genes awakened and altered the activity of many systems in the body, from endocrine and blood to bone and muscle systems.

WHY IS EPIGENETIC SCIENCE USEFUL IN SKINCARE?

In the last decade geneticists and molecular biologists have been increasingly immersed in the study of epigenetic influences that can define all kinds of traits, including the ageing and general appearance of human skin.

Dermatology and aesthetic medicine both have use for epigenetic research. It’s no secret that with age the skin becomes thinner, more dry, loses its youthful radiance and glow, and wrinkles almost inevitably follow. This is why getting rid of wrinkles does not necessarily make the face appear younger. Ageing manifests in the changes of the skin’s health and appearance as much as in lines and creases.

As it turns out, epigenetic influences can be quite diverse. For example, the expression of genes, responsible for the general health of the body as a whole and the skin in particular, is accelerated by psychological comfort, social fulfilment, timely diagnostics and treatment of illness, financial security, clean environment and even intellectual activity, just as much as by healthy diet and exercise.

EPIGENETIC INGREDIENTS IN SKINCARE

Much of our genetic information has been decoded and we now know of many genes responsible for a wide variety of processes in the human body. In recent years, scientists have given us detailed information on hundreds of genes responsible for skin processes, including the syntheses of collagen and elastin, moisture levels, skin barrier properties and other structural elements.

EPIGENETIC INGREDIENTS AFFECT THE EXPRESSION OF CERTAIN GENES, WHICH LEADS TO THE DIRECT CHANGE OF THE CELLS FUNCTIONING IN RESPONSE TO EXTERNAL STIMULI.

This regulation can go in two ways: upregulation and downregulation.

Upregulation of genes leads to an increase of specific cellular components.

Downregulation of genes leads to a decrease in the number of cellular components responding to external substances.

Understanding the epigenetic factors that affect age-related changes in the skin allows us to use agents and methods able to increase the expression of positive genes and suppress the expression of negative genes.

MEDER BEAUTY EPIGENETIC SOLUTIONS

BLEPHARO-RICH EYE CREAM

Meder Beauty’s first epigenetically active product was a Blepharo-Rich Eye Cream (2016) it uses a specific complex of tri- and tetrapeptides upregulating synthesis of collagen III typical for the eye area and downregulating MMP enzymes, destroying the same collagen.

The regular application of this gentle eye cream helps to restore skin elasticity and visibly diminish wrinkles in the eye area.

VITA-LONG OIL

Vita-Long facial oil is rich in teprenone (GGA) and wakame ephemeral cell extract, alongside with Coenzyme Q10. All of these ingredients are able to act epigenetically, prolonging a cell’s life and improving energy processes in mitochondria and cellular oxygenation.

ARMA-LIFT CONCENTRATE

In Arma-Lift concentrate, Metabiotic resveratrol (resveratrol bio fermented by Pichia resveratroli bacteria) downregulates the expression of COX-1 enzyme known for its pro-inflammatory activity. Topical use of skincare enriched with this ingredient helps to reduce inflammation and calm skin. Apple stem cell extract, upregulates synthesis of Collagen IV also known as “Youth collagen”, helping to restore a skin firmness and elasticity. Arma-Lift concentrate also upregulates receptors of oestrogen helping the skin to stay firm despite menopausal hormonal changes ( called SERM-based approach).

RED-APAX CONCENTRATE

Red-Apax therapy downregulates the expression of specific “redness” receptors, reducing redness and sensitivity safely and quickly.

SALVA-HAND CREAM

Salva-Hand cream contains a high concentration of niacin and dexpanthenol, upregulating the genes responsible for regeneration and downregulating pro-inflammatory activity.
