Skincare Guide for Men

Why we don’t have a separate men’s range and won’t ever have.

Scientifically, there are key differences between male skin compared to female skin but that doesn’t mean that it requires specialised skincare.

HOW IS MALE SKIN DIFFERENT TO FEMALE SKIN?
Male skin is firmer and thicker by about 25%.

Male hormones (called androgens), make the skin’s deeper layers (called the dermis), firmer and bulkier. This commonly makes a man’s skin look a bit rougher, but at the same time more resilient and elastic.

The keratinous layer of male skin is also thicker and contains more keratin, adding to skin that looks rougher, patchier and without regular care darker and weathered.

Male skin has more collagen.

Collagen is a key protein of the deeper skin layers, responsible for the skin’s tone and elasticity. This is why men often look younger than their age. However, collagen can be destroyed by multiple external factors, such as UV. Many men neglect sunscreens and routine skin care, losing their natural advantage.

While both male and female skin lose the same amount of collagen with time, about 1% a year. As male skin starts with a higher starting point, signs of ageing can appear much later.

Men sweat almost twice as much as women.

This is in fact an advantage for male skin, as sweat contains a lot of lactic acid which helps retain moisture on the skin surface and maintain sufficient acidity. Leading to better protection and skin that is more moisturised. The sebaceous glands on male skin produce more sebum. This process is actually regulated by testosterone, the amount of which is much higher in men. Which means male skin is more prone to acne and severe rosacea.

SKINCARE FOR MEN – OUR GUIDE AND PRODUCT RECOMMENDATIONS

As with all skin, the key is to know which solutions will work best and to use them routinely.

CLEANSE SKIN EVERYDAY

Just the same as female skin, male skin should be cleansed daily. While many men wash their face with shaving soap or gel, it can be stripping for skin and lead to sensitivity.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: Net-Apax Prebiotic Cleansing Mask. No need to look for special or specific cleansers for men.

EXFOLIATION IS KEY

As male skin is thicker, it will benefit a lot from regular exfoliation. Ideally twice a week. This will help maintain a healthy complexion, skin softness and help avoid a ‘weathered’ look to skin.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: Enzy-Peel Double Action Exfoliating Mask.

SUPPORT THE MICROBIOME

Many men shave regularly and as a result it can disrupt their microbiome. The microscopic friends living on the skin surface can easily turn into enemies as a result of almost unavoidable micro-injuries. Leading to irritation, inflammation and more.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: Derma-Fill Prebiotic Moisturising Cream.

TREAT AESTHETIC CONCERNS

If there are aesthetic concerns, lines, dark circles etc – don’t be afraid to treat them! True quality products will work for both male skin and female skin with their ingredients able to penetrate. It is key however for male skin to be regularly exfoliated to remove excess dead cells from the keratinous layer.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: Blepharo-Light Eye Cream.

SUN PROTECTION IS FOR EVERYONE

All skin needs sun protection and sunscreens are a must. Especially when the UV index is 3 or higher. In Meder Beauty routines, daily serums with antioxidant protection can help boost skin’s natural ability to fight environmental damage.

OUR RECOMMENDATION: Soin-Apax Serum.
