SKINCARE WITHOUT RETINOL

Is it possible to get perfect skin using skincare without retinol? Yes, absolutely.

Meder formulations do not use retinol in any of our products due to a long list of side effects and possible risk for some people. Personally, I think there is too much retinol out there already. Unfortunately, people tend to overuse it, and it is not the safest ingredient.

Side effects and complications of retinol include:

  • skin peeling and flaking;

  • irritation;

  • redness;

  • itching;

  • increased sensitivity and irritation;

  • breakouts;

  • higher risk of UV damage and pigmentation.

RETINOL IS NOT SAFE DURING PREGNANCY AND BREASTFEEDING.

If you are expecting or planning a family, it is absolutely essential to switch to skincare without retinol.

It may not be the most popular point of view, but I do not believe in damaging one’s skin to make it look good.

WHAT SKINCARE WITHOUT RETINOL SHOULD I USE?

Yes, these days there is a variety of solutions you can try instead.

What skin concerns is retinol most commonly used for?

ACNE, OILY AND PROBLEM SKIN

Meder has been using avocutine (butyl avocadate) similar to retinol to treat oily and problem skin since 2013. Avocutine is organic and extracted from virgin avocado oil.

HOW AVOCUTINE WORKS

Avocutine inhibits a particular enzyme (5-alpha reductase), which transforms testosterone into DHT, a potent androgen playing a key part in the development of acne, seborrhoea and even alopecia. Avocutine slows down the transformation of testosterone and decreases sebum production by 30% in the first 2 weeks of application reducing greasy shine in the facial t-zone by 78% after 3 weeks.

Avocutine has a similar effect to retinol, but without any side effects. We use 3% avocutine in Equa-Derm Cream for oily and problem skin in combination with prebiotic Bioecolia and innovative antimicrobial Agarikon mushroom extract.

Equa-Derm is a great safe solution for people with oily, porous skin prone to acne, even antibiotic-resistant acne.

SKINCARE WITHOUT RETINOL FOR AGEING SKIN

BAKUCHIOL

A relatively new ingredient, Bakuchiol is quickly becoming a new favourite with skincare aficionados, mostly because of the growing public awareness of retinol side effects (retinol-related skin sensitivity is a growing concern as the increasing level of UV damage).

Bakuchiol is a metroterpene, an active molecule of the extract of Psoralea Corylifolia (Babchi or Bakuchi) seeds and leaves. It has been reported to have some anti-cancer activity (1983, still pre-clinical), hypothetically due to its structural similarity to resveratrol. Native to India, Babchi has been used in both Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine for many years, mostly as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent.

Similar in structure to retinol, bakuchiol acts as its functional analogue. Bakuchiol can upregulate the expression of types IV and I collagen and stimulate the synthesis of collagen type III in mature skin.

The application of bakuchiol shows significant reduction of lines and wrinkles as well as other signs of ageing, and improved skin elasticity. But most importantly, the use of bakuchiol-containing products does not seem to produce side effects associated with retinol.

Meder Beauty does not use bakuchiol, however our ageing skin range has the benefits of plant-based EGF, metabiotic resveratrol, apple stem cells and other innovative skincare ingredients whilst being safe at any age.
