Do You Really Need Eye Cream?

Skin is not the same all over the face. Certain areas have different functions, different needs and so they should be treated with specific care. The skin around your eyes is one of these areas and so introducing dedicated care, such as eye cream can be beneficial for signs of ageing and other common concerns such as dark circles. puffiness, wrinkles and more.

The skin around your eyes:

— Is at least two times thinner than facial skin, with high permeability.

— The muscles around it are constantly contracting when you blink.

— The subdermal level is rich in microcapillaries and prone to retaining fluids.

WHAT DO EYE CREAMS DO?

The best eye creams focus on targeting microcirculation. Maintaining a healthy microcirculation in the eye area is key to prevent premature signs of skin ageing, dark circles and puffiness.

As the skin surface around the eyes is thinner and the skin barrier less efficient, this results in the eye area being prone to dryness so creams should also be moisturising.

CAN I USE FACE MOISTURIZER AS AN EYE CREAM?

An average face moisturiser might not be designed to benefit the delicate skin of the eye area and can have the potential to damage its fragile skin.

There are two fundamental differences between eye cream and face cream.

DIFFERENT PH

Eye care products should have a slightly different pH. To keep them safe to use in the sensitive eye area, they should be more alkaline and closer to the pH of natural tears which is approximately 7.25.

Facial skincare is often more acidic approximately 4.7-5.0 and this can be even less for AHA-based products.

TEXTURE & PERMEABILITY

Eye skin is more permeable than facial skin.

Using face creams on this area can be too heavy, occlusive, or even too active, and it risks penetrating deeper than needed into the eye skin.

Textures that are also too rich for the eye area can lead to puffiness especially if used at night.

WHEN SHOULD I START USING EYE CREAM?

To prevent skin changes, an eye cream would be a good choice to include in skincare routines starting from your mid-late 20s. Often an easy addition and great complement alongside even the most minimal routines. If used properly eye creams can help to maintain skin health and avoid age related changes for many years.

HOW TO APPLY EYE CREAMS PROPERLY?

Never apply to the eyelids – this avoids overloading and causing puffiness.

Stroke or gently tap eye creams around the edge of your eye sockets, closing and opening your eyes with effort (exaggerated blinking) afterwards. This allows your muscles to do the work in evenly spreading the cream around your eyes.
